Welcome to ASLMS 2022, the 41st Annual Conference of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery

ASLMS is in its fifth decade as a world leader in promoting excellence in patient care by advancing biomedical application of lasers and energy-based technologies. If you work with medical lasers and other energy-based devices in a clinical, research, educational or manufacturing capacity and are committed to continuously improving patient care, this conference is for you!

Two World-Class Keynote Speakers for ASLMS 2022!

Ardem Patapoutian, PhD

Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2021 Recipient
Professor, Department of Neuroscience, Scripps Research

Plenary | Thursday, April 28, 2022 | 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM PT

Dr. Ardem Patapoutian is a molecular biologist specializing in sensory transduction. His notable contributions to science include identifying novel ion channels and receptors activated by temperature, mechanical force, and increased cell volume.

Presentation Title:  How do you feel? The molecules that sense touch

Presentation Summary:  The Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine 2021 was awarded to Dr. Patapoutian, along with David Julius, PhD, “for their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch.” He will share how his laboratory has shown that these ion channels play crucial roles in sensing temperature, touch, proprioception, pain, and regulating blood pressure.

Bruce Tromberg, PhD

Director of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Plenary | Saturday, April 30, 2022 | 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM PT

Dr. Bruce Tromberg oversees a portfolio of research programs at NIBIB, focused on developing, translating, and commercializing engineering, physical science, and computational technologies in Biology and Medicine.  In addition, he leads NIBIB’s Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx Tech) innovation initiative to increase SARS-COV-2 testing capacity and performance.

Presentation Title:  NIBIB and the pandemic response:  New opportunities for accelerating innovation from in vitro diagnostics to medical imaging

Presentation Summary:  Dr. Tromberg will share the role NIBIB plays in establishing interdisciplinary partnerships and teams to accelerate technology development and commercialization. With the emergence of COVID-19, special congressional appropriations more than doubled the NIBIB budget (FY20/21), providing an unexpected opportunity to leverage NIBIB networks in support of the national pandemic response. The societal and economic impact of NIBIB investments in urgently needed COVID-19 technologies spanning from Medical Imaging to In Vitro Diagnostics will be described. These accomplishments highlight how non-traditional funding mechanisms, such as NIBIB’s RADx Tech program, can drive innovation with unprecedented speed and impact.

Her style is energetic, experiential, and pragmatic. Participants leave their sessions inspired, aware, and clear about becoming more effective at work and home. Hope earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Duke University and completed a Master of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband, teenage children, and dog Mona.

Presentation Title:  Flipping the Script on Stress, Overwhelm, and Perfectionism

Presentation Summary:  Let’s face it. Our daily lives are busy, stressful, and full of unknowns. It’s hard to end each day fatigued … and feeling like we didn’t accomplish everything we set out to do. This is the mindset of many professional women who are, frankly, nailing it. What we often see in others, we have a hard time seeing in ourselves. In this interactive session, we will:

  • Understand why our perception doesn’t always match reality
  • Learn a method for turning around overwhelm, negative thoughts, and inner critic rumblings
  • Leave feeling empowered and balanced
